Design and optimization of the PET system. Leader: Nicola Belcari, UNIPI (M1-M30)

WP3 is dedicated to the development of the PET system. The PET scanner will be designed and optimized to respond to the double requirement of high performance and cost-effectiveness as well as the need of compactness and insensitivity to magnetic field to make it fully compatible with MR. The PET system will have a ring geometry consisting of 54 modules arranged in three rings. With such an arrangement the system will offer a field-of-view of about 220 mm diameter and 150 mm axially with a bore size of 300 mm diameter. The inner bore will be then large enough to be able to accommodate the human head and the head RF coil. The detectors will be characterized by a high degree of modularization for better optimizing count rate performance and ease of system scalability.
